Syracuse taxi company owner faces insurance fraud charges
The owner of a Syracuse, N.Y., taxi company surrendered to police amid allegations he used the name of a retired senior citizen to apply for workers’ compensation insurance.
Frank Manzi, 57, who owns and operates the Yellow Taxi Co. of Syracuse, surrendered to authorities Dec. 18, 2009, according to the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF).
An investigation by the NYSIF’s Division of Confidential Investigations, in conjunction with state regulators, found that Manzi allegedly used the former employee’s name to apply for insurance through the NYSIF by forging that name on his application for insurance.
Manzi used the name to apply for the insurance, according to authorities, apparently concerned about a past incident involving a claim submitted to NYSIF under a workers’ compensation claim policy for Century Taxi, another company he owns.
As a result of the probe, Manzi is charged with insurance fraud, criminal possession of a forged instrument, offering a false instrument for filing and fraudulent practices.
