Specialty insurer Torus has announced that it has hired a trio of renewable energy underwriters to work out of its Jersey City, N.J., office.

Angie Adams, Adam Newman and Wayne Jacobson, an underwriting team formerly with HSBC Insurance’s U.S. Intermediary Solutions division, will write primary lines of general liability and auto liability for renewable energy, according to the company, which provides commercial, professional and specialty insurance and reinsurance products through its United Kingdom, Bermuda and United States insurance subsidies.

Torus said the new team also will have umbrella and excess capability.

David Perez, head of global casualty for Torus, said in a statement that more commercial businesses “are focusing on the expansion and development of energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat.

“From 2006 to 2008, investment in renewable energy has more than doubled,” he said. “Developing custom products and services that cater to the renewable energy industry, as well as hiring an underwriting team with proven expertise, only reinforces our strategic goals of providing specialized underwriting solutions for our customers.”

Adams previously served as group director/president of HSBC’s New York-based unit and has more 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. She joined HSBC in 2006 to create a MGA unit focusing on the needs of the small and middle market energy industry. She previously managed a start up energy division at AIG prior to joining HSBC.

Newman previously served as senior vice president of the HSBC unit and Jacobson, its chief underwriting officer and vice president.
