CIGNA expanding individual health coverage outside U.S.

CIGNA International has announced it will develop and offer its individual private medical insurance (PMI) to customers around the globe.

The Philadelphia, Pa.-based unit of health insurer CIGNA said in a statement it will provide local PMI for citizens in countries outside of the United States. as well as to individual expatriates and high net-worth individuals.

Overseeing the new endeavor is Keith Biddlestone, who joins CIGNA from Bupa International, where he spent more than 25 years in a variety of health care leadership position in Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, the insurer said. Bupa offers health coverage to over 800,000 individuals across the globe through its operations in areas including the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, France and Australia.

Biddlestone will report to CIGNA International president William L. Atwell and is responsible for establishing and implementing the company’s individual PMI strategy on an international scale.

Atwell said in a statement that he is “very pleased” to have Biddlestone in “this important role for CIGNA International.

“While our goals are aggressive, with Keith’s leadership, capability, expertise, and in-depth knowledge of the individual PMI arena, I’m confident he’ll be successful in this new role and help CIGNA International better serve individual expatriates and local citizens around the globe,” Atwell said.
