MIA exploring possible violations over water line insurance ads
The Maryland Insurance Administration says it is investigating recent advertisements sent to Baltimore residents suggesting that insurance on the water service to their homes is required under law.
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works issued a notice to residents Jan. 28, following consumer concerns over mailings to their homes regarding “water line service coverage” insurance from a private company that is not sponsored or endorsed by the department’s bureau of water and wastewater.
The consumer notice said some citizens may be confused by the wording on the advertisement as a requirement under law, which it is not. Property owners are responsible for repairs to their service from the meter to their home or business, the department said, but securing coverage for repairs and other potential problems, such as root intrusions or blockages, is not mandated.
Karen Barrow, a spokeswoman for the MIA, told IFAwebnews.com that the agency “is aware of this issue and is in the process of conducting an investigation into any potential insurance violations.”
Citizens are encouraged to check with regulatory agencies such as the MIA with questions or concerns about an insurance policy. The city’s department of public works advised checking homeowners or business policies before securing supplemental insurance.
