Tennessee man faces felony fraud charge after fake motorcycle theft
A Chattanooga, Tenn., man faces a felony charge of insurance fraud after law enforcement officials say he asked an employee to steal his Harley Davidson in order to obtain money from his insurance company.
Clay Ledkins, 46, turned himself in following an investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Ledkins is the owner of Clay Danger Karaoke in Chattanooga, and the former owner of the Danger Zone Bar and Grill in South Pittsburg, Tenn.
Ledkins filed a fraudulent stolen vehicle report with South Pittsburg police June 16, 2009, reporting that his motorcycle was stolen from the Danger Zone Bar, the CID said. He subsequently filed a claim with Tennessee Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., the CID said.
An investigation determined that Ledkins told an employee of the bar to steal the motorcycle in order for him to collect money from his insurer amid financial problems. That conversation, authorities said, was overheard by a patron of the bar, who also witnessed Ledkins give the employee the keys to the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was located more than three months later, dismantled in Marion County, Tenn.
Also charged in the case are Tim Champion, 26, Gino Martin, 43 and Nick Talley, 22, all of South Pittsburg, Tenn.
Ledkins is due in court to face the felony charge Feb. 10.
