MIA advises insurers on cancellations caused by snowstorm
The Maryland Insurance Administration is advising insurance companies to “provide reasonable accommodations” to policyholders regarding cancellations caused by the second of two heavy snowstorms to hit the state.
Acting Insurance Commissioner Beth Sammis advised that insurers should provide the accommodations regarding cancellations, citing Gov. Martin O’Malley’s declaration of a state of emergency for the state. Her notice was issued as snow started falling Feb. 9, the second major snowstorm to hit the region in less than a week and one likely to drop between 8 inches and 20 inches of snow, according to several forecasts.
“Because of this unusual weather, daily life has been disrupted for many consumers,” Sammis wrote in MIA Bulletin 10-05. “To avoid cancellations for personal auto insurance and homeowners insurance, I encourage insurers to provide reasonable accommodations to policyholders during this time, including, but not limited to, a grace period for premium payments.”
