Former La. clinic owner ordered to pay restitution to clients, insurer
The former owner of a Baton Rouge, La., scoliosis treatment clinic must pay more than $160,000 in restitution to several former patients and a local insurer following his conviction on eight counts of insurance fraud.
Arthur Copes, 52, of Baton Rouge was recently sentenced and must also pay $30,000 in fines and serve three years in prison, according to The Advocate (Baton Rouge) newspaper.
In July 2008, Copes was convicted of fraudulently billing Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana for more than $88,000. He also was found to have expected upfront payments from clients at The Scoliosis Treatment Recovery System Clinic, who thought they were seeing a licensed medical doctor, which Copes was not, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Copes’ restitution amount also includes $47,000 to the Louisiana Department of Justice for investigation and prosecution costs and $4,600 to the National White Collar Crime Center, according to The Advocate.
