California man charged with fraud after allegedly burning vehicle
A Victorville, Calif., man faces felony charges of arson and insurance fraud, accused of purposely setting fire to his Corvette to receive funds from his auto insurer.
Venancio Garcia, 28, was recently arrested and charged by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Auto Insurance Fraud Unit.
In June 2009, the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a call for a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette that was burning. Prosecutors say the fire seemed suspicious to firefighters, and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson-Bomb Detail was called to the scene.
Investigators determined that the fire had been purposely set and the only person with the opportunity and the means to set the fire was the Corvette’s owner, Garcia.
Garcia notified his insurance company, placing a claim stating that the car fire was caused by electrical problems.
With the help of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, San Bernardino law enforcement and the district attorney’s office’s fraud unit investigated the matter and deemed that Garcia set fire to the car and initiated his insurance claim to have the insurer assume the financial responsibility of the Corvette, prosecutors said.
