Former Calif. prison officer to pay $170K in restitution for fraud
A former correctional officer at Folsom State Prison in Represa, Calif., must repay the state $170,309 in restitution following her conviction on 14 counts of insurance fraud and other fraud related offenses.
June Ann Lucena must make the payments to the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) following her December 2007 jury trial conviction on the charges, for which she received a seven-year prison sentence, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
The restitution to the state fund is in addition to the $244,000 she was ordered to pay the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) in December 2009.
In 1999, Lucena, during her work for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, suffered a work-related injury and began receiving workers’ compensation benefits and also filed for a disability retirement with CalPERS.
She received benefits from CalPERS in addition to the benefits from SCIF, according to officials.
Lucena recovered from her injuries, but continued to claim she was severely restricted in her physical abilities, but surveillance videos showed her riding a personal watercraft and going down a water slide without any problems.
The $170,309 in restitution to SCIF represents the amount of money she fraudulently obtained in disability payments. Lucena must also disclose her financial assets as of the date of her arrest in late 2004, according to the district attorney’s office.
