A former insurance agent with Wright-Gardner Insurance in Hagerstown, Md., who is also a local high school basketball coach, is accused of 26 incidents of theft from his former employer, amounting to more than $30,000.

Chad Michael Brashears, 27, of Hagerstown, Md., was charged in a criminal complaint with one count of theft scheme plus $500, and 26 counts of theft plus $500, according to The Herald Mail (Hagerstown, Md.).

Court records allege Brashears stole money from Wright-Gardner in amounts ranging from $523 to $2,192 from Nov. 1, 2006, to Aug. 8, 2008, according to the report.

Brashears was employed at the firm between January 2005 and Aug. 8, 2008, and specialized in Hub Insurance Protection Plan (HIPP) coverage, according to various sources.

Brashears remains licensed to sell insurance in the state, according to the Maryland Insurance Administration’s website, and had yet to receive a criminal summons at the time of the Herald-Mail’s report.

As a result of the allegations, Brashears was suspended from his position as coach of the St. Maria Goretti High School boys basketball team, a role he assumed in April 2008.
