N.Y. woman accused of burning car so insurer would cover loan
A Schoharie County, N.Y., woman faces up to 15 years in state prison following her arrest for allegedly reporting her car as stolen, wrecked and burned.
Charlene L. Papas, 39, of Gilboa, N.Y., is accused of making the false report in order to file a claim with her insurer, Erie Insurance Co., according to the New York State Insurance Department.
Investigators alleged that after Papas fell behind on loan payments for her 2005 Ford Taurus, which was having mechanical problems, she made the claim. It was eventually discovered that the automobile never was stolen and Papas allegedly burned the vehicle intentionally.
Erie paid off Papas’ loan on the car, estimated at $10,000.
She faces charges of third-degree insurance fraud and third-degree arson, both felony offenses. A hearing will be scheduled in Schoharie County Court for her to answer the charges.
No date has been set for the hearing.
