Former N.Y. insurance agent accused of stealing $15,400 in premiums
Complaints by a pair of property owners have led to the arrest of a former New York insurance agent accused of stealing $15,400 in premiums meant for commercial property-casualty policies.
New York State Police recently arrested Emil Feduniec, 52, of Tuckahoe, N.Y., following investigations by the New York State Insurance Department’s Frauds and Consumer Services bureaus.
Feduniec is accused of leaving his customers exposed to liability after failing to remit premiums for coverage, including one property owner who lost $25,000 as the result of damage to his home he paid Feduniec to insure, officials with the NYSID said.
The former agent collected premiums from property owners in 2008 and 2009, but never paid the money to the insurance wholesaler, with whom he arranged to place policies with three property-casualty companies, unnamed by the NYSID. These policies were subsequently cancelled.
Feduniec’s license to sell insurance expired in 2008 after he failed to renew it.
Following complaints by four of Feduniec’s customers, the NYSID’s Consumer Services Bureau looked into accusations of the former agent failing to respond to inquiries when the consumers contacted him for information about their policies.
Feduniec faces charges of grand larceny, a felony, which could result in up to seven years in state prison, if convicted.
