A Wilson, N.C., woman was arrested after receiving $6,693 in insurance claims from Nationwide Insurance Co. for a robbery she allegedly staged.

Leslie Michelle Nowell, 30, was charged with two counts each of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Department investigators said Nowell filed a report with the Wilson Police Department indicating she was robbed of assorted jewelry, pocketbooks and cash while working at her store, Divine Décor & Gift. Investigators allege that Nowell staged the incident.

Nowell subsequently received two checks from Nationwide for her losses from a robbery that never occurred, according to arrest warrants. The alleged scheme was brought to the attention of investigators from a tip.
