Working in Va. nets woman $36,000 in workers’ compensation restitution
A former Broome County, N.Y., resident must pay $36,000 in restitution to the New York Insurance State Fund after she was found working at a Walgreens store in Virginia while accepting workers’ compensation benefits.
Veronica McClendon, 56, was sentenced in Broome County Court March 1 after voluntarily returning to New York to resolve the matter, according to the New York State Insurance Department. McClendon also was sentenced to a three-year conditional discharge.
McClendon was accused of accepting benefits from the New York State Insurance Fund on the basis that a job-related injury prevented her from working. At the same time, however, she was working in Virginia at the Walgreens. She accepted benefits over a five-year period, according to officials.
The NYSID’s Frauds Bureau was assisted in their investigation by the New York Insurance Fund’s Division of Confidential Investigations and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department.
