Fire fraud scheme allegedly explodes on New York man following arrest
A Gilboa, N.Y., man, who claimed he was thrown 35 feet from his mobile home following a propane explosion, recently landed in jail following allegations of insurance fraud and arson.
The man’s arrest also came two weeks after his wife was also arrested on the same charges in a separate incident.
James E. Papas, 48, was arrested following an investigation into an Oct. 6, 2009, fire at his mobile home and his subsequent insurance claim, according to the New York State Insurance Department.
Papas told authorities that he was thrown through a bedroom window by the explosion and subsequent fire that damaged his mobile home. He drove himself to a local emergency room and was treated for minor injuries, officials said.
He later filed an insurance claim for the loss of the mobile home, receiving $2,000 through his homeowners’ policy, officials said. The insurer was not named by the NYSID.
Investigators later determined that the mobile home fire was purposely set and not the result of a furnace explosion, and that Papas’ homeowners’ policy was set to expire two days after the fire, according to prosecutors.
If convicted on both third-degree insurance fraud and third-degree arson, Papas could serve up to 15 years in state prison.
On Feb. 23, Papas’ wife, Charlene L. Papas, was arrested and accused of intentionally burning her car earlier this year. She also faces charges of insurance fraud and arson.
