Jury finds former Ind. insurance agent guilty of securities fraud
A former Indiana insurance agent, accused of targeting a terminally ill man with an unregistered investment opportunity, was found guilty by a Franklin County jury.
Christopher West of Connersville, Ind., was found guilty of three felony violations of the Indiana Securities Act, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office.
West advised the late Anthony Wiggins and his wife, Taura, of Laurel, Ind., that they were eligible for an early payout on a life insurance policy because of the man’s terminal cancer, according to officials. West suggested the couple invest in an Indianapolis apartment complex through a promissory note he was offering, but neither West nor the investment were registered through the Indiana Secretary of State Securities Division, as required under state law.
The division was joined in its investigation of West by the Indiana State Police.
West was charged in November 2009 on the three felony counts.
He is scheduled for sentencing April 28 in Franklin County Circuit Court.
