A New York City woman must pay $36,000 in restitution to the New York State Insurance Fund and will serve five years of probation for collecting benefits while employed as a home health aide.

Alice Jean-Michel, 53, was sentenced recently in Ulster County Court in New York, following her earlier guilty plea to third degree insurance fraud and workers’ compensation fraud, according to the New York State Insurance Department.

Investigators with the NYSID’s Frauds Bureau said Jean-Michel started collecting workers’ compensation benefits in 2004 following a job-related injury. She then reported to the New York State Insurance Fund that she was not working while she was actually working as an health aide, officials said.
