A Buffalo, N.Y., man was arrested and accused of picking a house at random on which to make a fake insurance claim, receiving $3,200 through the ruse.

Buffalo police arrested Sidney Edwards, 55, following an investigation into a “phantom insurance claim,” the New York State Insurance Department said.

Edwards allegedly bought an Allstate homeowners’ policy on a home in Kenmore, N.Y., then filed a claim for damages to a garage door. Allstate honored the claim, paying him $1,600 and then issuing another $1,600 check after Edwards allegedly said he never received the first payment.

Insurance investigators said Edwards picked out a house at random, using the address to secure the policy with Allstate. He also allegedly provided the insurer with a fictitious bank account number for payment on the premium.

The property owners of the Kenmore house do not know Edwards and were unaware of the Allstate policy, regulators said. Investigators said no damage ever occurred to the home, but Edwards cashed both checks from Allstate for the supposed damage.

Edwards faces two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, if convicted.
