Va. families say insurers deceiving customers about autism coverage

A group of parents is seeking the help of the Virginia State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance to make clear what insurers must cover for autistic children.

More than 30 parents, through the Virginia Autism Project, say there is “ongoing deception and obfuscation by health insurance companies,” according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The parents said insurers operating in Virginia are denying payments for therapies recognized as standard of care for autism, purely for business reasons, and are not disclosing guidelines regarding coverage when asked by phone.

The parents say medical services coverage is limited to doctor visits leading to the diagnosis of autism, but not subsequent therapy. Making that clearer, the parents said in their complaint, would help prevent parents from purchasing unsuitable coverage, according to the report.

Earlier this year, the Virginia Senate approved legislation mandating coverage of behavioral therapy by insurers, but the bill failed in the House of Delegates.

Doug Gray, executive director of the Virginia Association of Health Plans, told the newspaper that member companies are following state law mandating coverage for medical services for autism.
