A Red Hook, N.Y., handyman is accused of misrepresenting his work status in order to collect more than $20,000 in workers’ compensation benefits.

Philip Silvernail, 60, was arrested June 7 and charged with insurance fraud in the third degree, according to the New York State Insurance Department.

Officials said Silvernail, a former Poughkeepsie Housing Authority employee, reported a back injury while working for that employer in 1992, claiming he could hardly get out of the house and could not walk after the work-related injury. Investigators, however, say an investigation shows that Silvernail still managed to carry and paint on a ladder, replace window shutters and an outside deck, install awnings and stair rails and also operate a backhoe.

Silvernail collected $20,546.20 from the New York State Insurance Fund after reporting the injury, officials said.

His alleged misrepresentation could result in seven years in state prison.
