Carol Cutter, insurance commissioner for Indiana, died Sept. 6 in Indianapolis, Ind., according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and a death notice posted online.
Cutter, who died one day after her 67th birthday, had been on medical leave since June. A cause of death was not provided.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our colleague, Indiana Insurance Commissioner Carol Cutter,” said NAIC President Jane L. Cline, who also is West Virginia’s insurance commissioner, in a statement. “Carol brought a wealth of experience and expertise to her job and her dedication to the people in her state was beyond comparison. We extend our thoughts and condolences to Carol’s family and loved ones.”
Indiana Gov. Mitchell Daniels Jr., a Republican appointed Cutter to be commissioner in June 2009, replacing Jim Atterholt, who left for a position at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. Cutter went on medical leave earlier this year.
Stephen Robertson was named acting commissioner in June.
In addition to leading the Indiana Department of Insurance’s commissioner, Cutter was active in the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) at the national, state and local level. The Indiana Association of Health Underwriters gives an annual award on her behalf, The Carol Cutter Legislative Excellence Award.
