Md. woman’s disappearance in Aruba may be tied to insurance policies

An insurance policy may become a key clue in the ongoing investigation of a Maryland woman who disappeared in Aruba.

Gary Giordano, a suspect tied to the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, 35, of Frederick, Md., tried to redeem a life insurance policy that could be worth $1.5 million, according to an Associated Press report. A separate traveler’s insurance policy also may be at issue, as authorities suggest Giordano contacted the travel insurance company just days after Gardner went missing.

“We knew from Mr. Giordano himself that travel insurance was taken out and that’s what we are investigating. It was subpoenaed and we are investigating that material to see if it bears relevance to the investigation,” Aruba Solicitor General Taco Stein said, according to the news service.

Stein would not comment on the AP report about the policy.

Giordano told investigators that he had been snorkeling with Gardner the day she disappeared.

While no charges have been filed in connection with the disappearance, the insurance policies could offer a motive, if foul play is uncovered.
