Steven M. Goldman, a former New Jersey insurance commissioner, has joined the board of directors for Englewood Cliffs, N.J.-based North Jersey Community Bancorp.

Goldman resigned as commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance in July 2009, after serving for three years as an appointee of former Gov. Jon S. Corzine. Goldman is a partner at the law firm of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel.

“Steven’s deep experience and insights in banking, the regulatory/legislative environment and legal matters will be a fabulous addition to our Board,” said Frank Sorrentino III, chairman and CEO of North Jersey Community Bancorp, in a statement. “He will be an invaluable resource for NJCB as we continue to grow our business and footprint while furthering our success in delivering premier customer service and quality financial products to our customers.”

As banking and insurance commissioner, Goldman worked closely with state officials and agencies to develop strategic approaches for increasing liquidity to community banks as a means to extending credit to the New Jersey business community. He also developed a response plan to help New Jersey deal with the mortgage foreclosure crisis.

Previously, he was a senior partner at law firm Sills, Cummis & Gross, where he represented numerous banks in connection with the financing of acquisitions and recapitalizations.
