Goodyear sues Travelers in Pa. court over asbestos claims from 1960s
Harking back to asbestos-related claims in the 1960s and 1970s, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has sued Travelers Casualty & Surety Co. over the insurer’s denial of coverage for future claims under policies in force up to 50 years ago.
The case has been moved to the U.S. District Court in Western Pennsylvania from a state court.
Goodyear claims an alleged breach of contract on primary and umbrella policies issued by Travelers and its predecessor, Aetna Casualty and Surety Co.
Goodyear says Travelers stopped paying defense and indemnity costs in late January.
According to the tire maker, it has been named a defendant in thousands of suits costing hundreds of millions of dollars for diseases and injuries allegedly incurred years after asbestos exposure.
Goodyear claims it has met deductibles and limits have been met, and it anticipates more claims.
