President Barack Obama minced no words in his weekly radio and Internet address Oct. 17, saying the Congress’ review of the anti-trust exemption granted to insurance companies is appropriate because they are standing in the way of health care reform.
Patrick Leahy, chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, has introduced a bill that would eliminate the federal antitrust exemption given to health insurance and medical malpractice insurance companies as a means of cutting costs.
With the advent of the Supreme Court argument, all parties involved in the health insurance business are waiting. This is particularly true of health insurance carriers. Each insurance carrier to date has made adjustments to their business based on their best interpretation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the federal health reform law.
