While the Obama Administration is confident that the coming week will produce the first step in a march to victory on health care reform, at least one Republican is saying the way Democrats are fighting for change is “a political kamikaze mission.”

The newest member of Congress said health care reform was on its “last legs” before his election and is calling for Washington, D.C., to start from scratch on health reform, a stance echoed by one of the highest-ranking Republicans.

While no one is ready to declare that health reform initiatives being weighed by Congress are dead, Democrats and Republicans have very differing views of the condition of one final piece of comprehensive legislation.

Calling the inclusion of a government-run health insurance program “a mistake,” one senator is saying that no reform at all is better than any reform including this stipulation.

President Barack Obama minced no words in his weekly radio and Internet address Oct. 17, saying the Congress’ review of the anti-trust exemption granted to insurance companies is appropriate because they are standing in the way of health care reform.

With Congress reconvening after its August break, the final Senate committee to draft health reform legislation may endorse a plan that includes a tax on private insurance companies and forgoes a government-run competitor.
