Carol Cutter, insurance commissioner for Indiana, died Sept. 6 in Indianapolis, Ind., according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and a death notice posted online.

New Jersey Department of Banking Insurance Commissioner Tom Considine was elected to the national executive committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), as well as the vice chairman of the NAIC’s Northeast Zone by his peers in the Northeast Zone.

Virginia Insurance Commissioner Alfred W. Gross, one of the longest serving at that post in the nation, plans to retire Dec. 31.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) said Oklahoma has become the 20th jurisdiction to use its State Based Systems (SBS).

State insurance regulators moved closer to establishing its rules for medical loss ratios, or MLRs, required under federal health reform.

The National Council of Insurance Legislators wants to ensure that “minefields – embedded with danger” in any retained-asset accounts are prevented by the adoption of a “Beneficiaries Bill of Rights.”

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners is “re-reviewing” disclosure requirements regarding retained asset accounts (RAAs), said Jane L. Cline, the association’s president.

Nothing inspires a politician more than a good populist cause, and one of the most populist of all causes in the last ten years or so has been insurers’ use of credit scoring. It has provided fuel for a fire that no one can effectively extinguish. No response to charges levied against its use is sufficient. Its benefits do not matter. In short, as far as government and the public are concerned, it is indefensible, but insurers insist on fighting for the ability to use it.

The organization representing state insurance commissioners has scheduled a two-day hearing in July in Washington, D.C., to discuss issues resulting from the passage of federal health care reform legislation earlier this year.
